DATES TO REMEMBER:
-Wednesday, October 3rd—Pupil Count Day
-Friday, October 5th—Progress Reports Sent Home
-Monday, October 15th—Delayed Start
-Tuesday, October 23rd—Title 1 Night

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
Our student of the week is Jonathan Wiggins. Jonathan enjoys fishing, skiing, riding his tractor, and going to Disney World. His favorite place to go is to the beach in Florida. When he grows up, Jonathan would like to be a construction worker and drive the big equipment. Congratulations to Jonathan on being Student of the Week!

**I select a new ‘student of the week,’ every other week so that their posters can be on display for 2 weeks; I select students based on the order that they bring their posters in.

BOOK-IT CALENDAR:
Attached to your child's newsletter you will find an October Book-It Calendar with an informational letter. Just keep track of the days that you read with your child, send back your calendar @ the end of the month, and I will return your calendar with a Pizza Hut certificate. Pizza and Reading: what a great combination!

PROGRESS REPORTS:
Progress reports will be sent home this Friday with students. We are really beginning to fall into a nice routine here at school and gel together as a class. The progress report will give you an idea of how your child is doing socially and with following the rules and routines at school. You will also receive your child’s DIBELS results and hopefully their Aimsweb results (I am still waiting on this data). A couple of things to keep in mind with these screeners: their score indicates how many correct responses they had in 1 minute, also it takes time and practice for Kindergartners to learn what the assessor is asking them to do. However, it does give us a starting point as we begin targeting skills and needs. If you have any questions regarding your child’s progress at school, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or stop in.

TITLE 1 FAMILY NIGHT:
Attached to your child's newsletter you will find an invitation for our upcoming Title 1 Family Night; it will be a great night of food, learning & fun! RSVPs are needed back by October 17th and you only need to send back 1 RSVP per family. Hope to see you there!

READING:
This week we will be reading The Wheels on the Bus as we work on comprehension & vocabulary skills. Our focus letters for this week are V, M, C, & J and we will introduce our first sightword: the. We will continue to work on rhyming and retelling the familiar nursery rhymes: Humpty Dumpty & The Itsy Bitsy Spider. This week we will introduce a new beanie baby strategy for Comprehension: Spinner the Spider, who helps us make connections as we read. During Read to Self time, students will have the opportunity to share some of their favorite books from home with a partner; we will also begin adding some new materials to our book boxes from the classroom so that students can bring their books back home soon.

WRITING:
Today we read through our September Journals and talked about how good writers go back and ‘edit’ their work. Students are bringing their journals home to share with you. Please take a few minutes to look through them with your child. Some things we worked on this month are: drawing a big picture and using at least 3 colors. This week we will begin our October Journals, build rhyming spiders, and create a class book about The Itsy Bitsy Spider.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will begin our Science Unit on Living and Non-Living Things. We will continue to observe the changes that occur in the Fall and have a visit from Scrappy the Squirrel (puppet) who will have plenty to share about Fall. We will also read several narrative and informational texts related to spiders.

MATH:
We will continue to work on patterning, identifying and naming shapes, counting and comparing amounts, and identifying and comparing numbers.

Newsletter Updates for the Week of September 24th

DATES TO REMEMBER:
-Wednesday, October 3rd—Pupil Count Day
-Monday, October 15th—Delayed Start

SNACK/PARENT VOLUNTEER CALENDAR:
Your September snack calendar runs through the first week of October. My hope is to send home the October Snack Calendar at the end of the week, with parent volunteers included. Several of you have expressed interest in volunteering on a regular basis and I appreciate your willingness to help out, and your patience as I coordinate the schedule. Just a reminder to please send in 2 snacks on your child’s day; one for the morning & one for the afternoon. At this time we have 19 students in our classroom.

AIMSWEB & DIBELS:
The students were screened last week using the Aimsweb Screener for Math. The Dibels team will be coming in this week to begin assessing the students for Reading. For Kindergartners, they will be asking them to name letters and identify ‘first sounds’ in words. I will share the results with you once I receive them.

ATTENDANCE:
Unfortunately we have had some illnesses already this year in our classroom. Our days in Kindergarten are busy and exhausting for many of the students; I’m sure you can tell by the time they arrive home. We have so much to learn this year and Kindergarten is such an important year of learning routines and foundational skills. So much of what we learn happens at large group, small groups, & with hands-on activities. Please help your child be their best by making sure they get plenty of rest. Also, if your child is going to be late or absent please be sure to call the office and let us know.

READING:
This week we will be reading Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten as we work on comprehension skills, vocabulary, & identifying characters. Our focus letters for this week are K, S, D, T, & R. During our literacy stations we will continue to work on identifying letters and their sounds. During our literacy stations, students complete activities at the tables and also visit the library, writing station, retelling station, abc station, puzzles & games, and the computers. This week we will introduce 2 new beanie baby strategies: Jabber the Reteller (Comprehension) and Lips the Fish, who reminds us to look at the first letter of a word and get our lips ready with the first sound. This week we will also talk about the difference between Narrative & Informational Texts.

WRITING:
This week we will learn about the importance of ‘details’ in our writing/drawing as we practice drawing a detailed picture of Mrs. Brinks. We will continue working on listening and speaking while storytelling & we will add to our list of: “Where Writer’s Get Ideas.” Later in the week, we will complete a Type 3 writing about what happens to the trees in the Fall and we will develop an Anchor Chart for “What do I do to write a story?”

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
Fall is officially here! This week we will finish up our study of apples and begin talking about the seasons and all of the changes that occur in the Fall. We will read
several books related to Fall; some Narrative and some Informational.

MATH:
We will continue to work on writing and identifying our numbers 0-9 and spend some time reading, extending, and creating patterns. Students will be introduced to coins this week and will practice sorting coins based on their size, color, & distinguishing features. We will also talk about different sizes and practice comparing heights of various objects around our classroom.

Newsletter Updates for the Week of September 17th

DATES TO REMEMBER:
-Monday, September 17th—Mileage Club Begins

We are off to a good start in Kindergarten! The students are adjusting to the routines and have done a great job with learning our classroom procedures. Last week we spent some time reinforcing how to walk in line and how to be good listeners at group time. We will continue to review and practice these things together. Students are now aware of our colored behavior chart and are working hard to ‘stay on green.’ Don’t be surprised if your child does have to move their clip, as we know that children often ‘test the waters’ to see if we really will hold them accountable.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
Our student of the week is Paige DeWitt. Paige enjoys reading, swinging, sliding, swimming, & playing basketball. Her favorite place to go is to her Aunt Debbie’s house, and when she grows up Paige would like to be a figure skater.
Congratulations to Paige on being our first Student of the Week!
**Remember to send in your All About Me posters!

KINDERGARTEN T-SHIRTS:
All of the students who went through Kindergarten Round-Up received a yellow McBain t-shirt. We will wear these periodically throughout the year on special days. If your child registered after round-up, or if they were in Jr. K last year, they will be receiving a t-shirt so that we can all match—compliments of the McBain PTO.

LABELS:
I mentioned at Kindergarten Orientation that the PTO collects various labels, which they turn in and redeem for supplies and equipment for the student body. Your child is bringing home a baggie with all of the details. You can send labels in to school in any Ziploc baggie; just make sure it is labeled with your child’s name and the # of labels—for every 20 labels they bring in, they are entered into a drawing for various prizes. This is an easy way to support the PTO and our students.

READING:
This week we will be reading From Head to Toe as we work on comprehension skills, rhyming, & comparing and contrasting. Our focus letters for this week are Y, E, L, Z, & I. During our literacy stations we will continue to work on letters, sounds, & our names. We will also practice identifying rhyming words and retelling Brown Bear & The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The students were introduced to the computers last week and they will begin using them during literacy stations by accessing starfall.com. The students are enjoying reading from their book boxes during ‘read to self’ time. This week we will introduce our very first beanie baby strategy: Eagle Eye who reminds us to look at the pictures for clues to figure out the words while we are reading.

WRITING:
We will continue practicing our ‘listening’ and ‘speaking’ skills during storytelling. We will complete a journal page about a butterfly and later in the week, students will work together to create a class book about their favorite animal from our focus text: From Head to Toe. I always reinforce with the students that when we write, we always start our letters at the top.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will introduce ‘concepts of time’ as we discuss the difference between past, present, & future. We are patiently waiting for our butterflies to emerge from their chrysalis’. This week we will also begin our study of apples; we will be reading several books related to apples and incorporate them into our math lessons.

MATH:
We will work on sorting various manipulatives by different attributes (color, size, shape, etc.). We will continue to practice recognizing and writing the numbers 1-9 and practice counting using one-to-one correspondence. We will conduct an experiment related to volume, create a birthday graph, and begin learning about patterns.

-Tuesday, September 11th—Picture Day
-Friday, September 14th—Book Orders Due
-Monday, September 17th—Delayed Start (10:00)
-Monday, September 17th—Mileage Club Begins

We had a busy first week getting to know each other and beginning to establish our classroom routines. It will take a few weeks to get the routines down. Friday was an especially busy day as we chased the Gingerbread Man all around the school. We visited many places and met several important people who work at our school; including the cooks, Mrs. Kelley (Gym), Mrs. Wiggins (Band), Mrs. Neverth (Music), John & Dan (custodians), Mrs. Brunick & Mrs. Eisenga (library), Mr. Harris (Superintendent), Mrs. Hill (secretary), & Mr. Smith (Principal). We finally found the Gingerbread Man back in our own classroom and we quickly gobbled him up before he could run away again. The students were very excited; I hope you had a chance to hear all about it!

PICTURES:
Our picture day is tomorrow—Tuesday, September 11th. ALL students WILL be photographed for the yearbook and library cards. If you’d like to purchase pictures, please be sure to send in your payment and completed envelope by tomorrow morning. Don’t forget your SMILE!

SPECIALS:
This week we will begin our normal schedule for specials.
Tuesday—Gym
Wednesday—Gym
Friday—Music & Library (every other week)
*We will visit the library this Friday for the first time. To begin with, students will be able to check out books to take back to the classroom. Later in the year, students will be able to bring their library books home.

READING:
The next few weeks we will be focusing on learning our letters and sounds by studying the letters in our names. We will introduce a letter each day and do several activities with the focus letter. Once we’ve made it through the entire alphabet, we will then start an in-depth study of each letter, spending a week on each letter. This week our reading lessons will focus on the letters H, N, G, P, & X. Our focus story for this week is Mary Wore Her Red Dress which we will use to reinforce ‘parts of a book’ & reading aloud using the illustrations. We will also practice identifying colors and color words.

WRITING:
We will practice ‘speaking’ using our storyteller voices and ‘listening’ while others tell their stories aloud. We will also create a class book about the Gingerbread Man and complete a journal page about our friends at school.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will continue to read many books about starting school and what it means to be a ‘good friend.’ We will also begin learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly as we watch the process firsthand in our discovery center.

MATH:
We will be learning how to identify and write the numbers 0-9 and practice counting items by sight, sound, and touch. We will also work on building numbers using different manipulatives. When practicing at home, please refer to the Number Rhymes handout that you received in your ‘First Day of School’ packet.

BOOK BOXES:
We will begin reading from our own book boxes by the end of the week. I still have a few students who need to bring in their 5-8 books from home; please send them in ASAP so we are ready to read!

Please be sure to check out my blog for newsletter updates and links to educational videos and games.

Gingerbread Day

Dear Kindergarten Parents,
Just a reminder that Friday is Gingerbread Day. We will be traveling all around the school in search of our Gingerbread Boy, as we visit several important places in the school and meet some very helpful school personnel. If you child has their Kindergarten shirt from Kindergarten Round Up, they are encouraged to wear it. Otherwise, please dress them in a yellow shirt.

Thanks,
Mrs. Brinks

Welcome to Kindergarten!!

I was wonderful meeting many of you at the open house last Wednesday.

Don't forget that our first day of school is Tuesday. This is a parent/child orientation day that begins at 10:00 and typically ends around 1:30. You will have lunch together, we will take a bus ride, and there will be many things in the classroom for you to explore and do. I will also have time to meet with parents and go over some information about kindergarten and answer any questions that you may have.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend! See you Tuesday!

Mrs. Brinks
