READING:
We have briefly introduced ALL of the letters of the alphabet, and now we will begin a more in-depth approach as we focus on a letter each week. This week we will be focusing on the Letter M and the sightword the. Our focus book for comprehension and vocabulary this week is Mouse Mess. We will also be reading several books about Monsters to help us learn about the letter M and get into the Halloween spirit! This week I will be launching Literacy Stations with the students. Students will be divided up into small groups of 3’s and they will travel throughout the classroom working at various stations with their team. I will be supporting and guiding the students as they work cooperatively within their teams. This is a hands-on approach to literacy and teaches the students independence and accountability. In a few weeks, after the students become familiar with the routine and expectations, then I will be pulling small groups of students to work on specific skills and strategies. We are beginning to ‘set the stage’ for incorporating the CAFÉ Reading Strategies, Read-to-Self, and Partner Reading, which we will gradually be introducing in the coming months.

ASSESSMENTS:
The next few weeks I will be assessing the students’ learning in preparation for Report Cards and Parent Teacher Conferences. In Kindergarten, the majority of our assessments are completed one-on-one. Please remind your child to always to their best at school. I look forward to sharing with you at conferences!

WRITING:
This week we will be reading The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything. We will be reenacting the story together as we talk about Organization. We will also be writing and illustrating 2 more class books, There’s An ____ Under My Bed & There’s A ____ In My Closet, which you will be able to check out at conferences. We will also complete an interactive writing together (Drawing a Monster) as the students work on identifying rhymes and practice adding details. We will finish up our October Journals this week, which I will save to share with you at conferences.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will read several stories related to Halloween and Pumpkins. On Thursday, we will be carving a jack-o-lantern together and counting the seeds. We will begin learning about ‘our democratic right to vote’ and what that means as we ‘vote’ on what kind of mouth to give our jack-o-lantern.

MATH:
This week we will work on ordinal numbers (first, second, third . . . ) and continue to practice writing numbers, counting objects, and matching the total to the corresponding number. Students will also be using a balance to weigh pumpkins and gourds and we will use ‘inchworms’ to measure different lengths of monster feet.

MOBILE DENTIST:
Just a reminder that the Mobile Dentist will be at our school on November 7th & 8th. Please return your forms ASAP if you are interested in having your child seen by the Mobile Dentist.

start sending them in any time.
Thanks so much!

CD PLAYERS/HEADPHONES:
I’m looking for a couple more walk-man’s/personal CD players for the students to use in the listening center, as well as extra headphones. I’ve exhausted my supply from my closets at home, and with all of the new technology out there, I was thinking that some of you might have these items in a garage sale pile that you’d be willing to donate?? If you do, please send them in; we could put them to good use in the classroom!

READING:
This week we will be reading the book Big and Little as we practice identifying and naming opposites. Our focus letters this week are L, U, Q, & F.

WRITING:
This week we will complete several journal pages; we will be drawing a rainbow and practice using our offices to write color words; we will also draw and write about a fire truck, and practice drawing pictures using shapes. We have been working on including at least 3 details in our drawings and trying to write the ‘first sounds’ we hear in words.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
October is Fire Prevention Month. We will be learning about fire safety and prevention the next couple of weeks. This week we will wrap up our Science Unit on Living and Non-living Things and on Tuesday we will take our unit assessment.

MATH:
This week we will work on identifying, ordering, and writing numbers 1-6. We will also continue to work on patterning, sorting, and graphing using pattern blocks. I’m getting ready to begin assessing the students for report cards. For this first quarter, the goal is for students to be able to count 1-25 orally, count 10 objects, recognize the four basic shapes, sort objects by color, and create an AB pattern.

Newsletter Updates - Week of October 3rd

DATES TO REMEMBER:
-Thursday, Oct. 6th—Elementary Title 1 Night
-Friday, Oct. 7th—Progress Reports Home
-Monday, Oct 10th—Delayed Start

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
Our student of the week is Ali Wright. Ali enjoys going to the beach and spending time with her family. Her favorite color is purple and when she grows up, she’d like to be a mom. Congratulations to Ali on being Student of the Week!
**Please remember to send in your child’s student of the week poster ASAP or pick up another copy Thursday evening.

ELEMENTARY TITLE 1 NIGHT:
This year we are combining all of our grade level Title 1 Nights into one Elementary-wide Title 1 Night. This event is scheduled for this Thursday, October 6th. We are asking families to RSVP, so that we can plan for food—Pizza! I encourage you to attend! In addition to dinner being served, each teacher will have specific learning activities set up in their classrooms, as well as handouts and materials for you to take with you to practice important skills at home. There will also be opportunities to enter into a drawing for some great prizes! Please get your RSVPs in ASAP. Hope to see you there!!

PROGRESS REPORTS/DIBELS:
Progress reports will be sent home this Friday with students. We are really beginning to fall into a nice routine here at school and gel together as a class. The progress report will give you an idea of how your child is doing socially and with following the rules and routines at school. You will also receive your child’s DIBELS results for ‘first sound fluency’ and ‘letter naming.’ A couple of things to keep in mind with DIBELS: their score indicates how many correct responses they had in a minute, also it takes time and practice for Kindergartners to learn what the assessor is asking them to do. However, it does give us a starting point as we begin targeting skills and needs. If you have any questions regarding your child’s progress at school, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or stop in.

READING:
This week we will be reading Mice Squeak, We Speak as we work on rhyming, identifying parts of a book, and comprehension skills. Our focus letters this week are I, K, O, & Z. This week we will also begin talking about opposites.

WRITING:
Today we read through our September Journals and talked about how good writers go back and ‘edit’ their work. Students are bringing their journals home today to share with you. Please take some time and look through them with your child. Some things we’ve worked on this month are: drawing a big picture and using at least 3 colors. This week we will begin our October Journals and use the book The Wind Blew to talk about ideas, organization, word choice, and voice.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will be focusing on Fall and the changes that are happening outside. On Friday, we will conduct a sink and float experiment with acorns and graph our results. We will also have a visit from Scrappy the Squirrel (puppet) who will have plenty to share about Fall. We will continue our Unit on Living and Nonliving Things. Last week we learned that all living things grow, change, and move on their own. This week we will learn about what living things ‘need’ to live and grow.

MATH:
This week we will be working on matching and counting objects 1-10, patterning, and sorting. We will also continue to practice naming and identifying shapes and writing our numbers.
