Newsletter Updates for the Week of May 30th

STUDENT OF THE WEEK: 
Our student of the week is Aylah Winkel. Aylah enjoys spending time with her friends & family and loves to go camping! She likes to eat pizza & cheese and her favorite book/movie is Frozen. Aylah aspires to become a doctor and work on a farm when she grows up. Congratulations to Aylah on being Student of the Week!

KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM:  
The location of the Kindergarten Program has been changed and will take place in the Multi-Use Room this Thursday at 1:45.  Please park in the main parking lot and enter through the gym/auditorium lobby doors.  After the program, you are welcome to sign your child out and take them home with you or they can also go home on the bus.

FIELDTRIP:  
The Kindergarten Classes will be going to Kettunen Center this Friday, June 3rd. We will leave school around 8:30 and return around 2:30.  Your child will need:
1) A sack lunch—no glass please
2) Sunscreen—if you feel they will need it
3) Appropriate clothing for outside activities—wear your gray Kindergarten t-shirt
*We will provide a morning and afternoon snack and bug spray if needed.
Parent chaperones are welcome, but we ask that childcare arrangements be made for younger siblings. Permission slips and $5 need to be returned ASAP.
TICKS:  PLEASE be sure to check your child thoroughly after we return from our fieldtrip; as we will be outside and in the woods for most of the day. Doctors recommend checking their hair, inside elbows, behind the knees, under arm pits, and other ‘cracks’ and crevices. We are hoping not to bring any unwanted ‘pests’ home!!

PTO BIKE-A-THON:  
Just a reminder to turn in your pledge envelope ASAP if your child is planning to participate in the Bike-a-thon this Saturday.

READING:
This week our class will be reading stories about sorting different groups of things in new ways. Children will learn how to sort objects by size, shape, color, weight, or texture.
· Vocabulary—sort & similar - Practice sorting toys, cereal, laundry etc.
· High-Frequency Word—come & does
· Category Words—opposites—Say a word and ask your child to think of a word with the opposite meaning.
· Phonics: long e & the digraph th—Play a rhyming game with your child. Say a word with the long sound, and have your child think of a rhyming word. For example, encourage your child to say and write words that rhyme with the word he, such as me, be, and we.

WRITING:  
This week we will finish up our latest informational text about butterflies, plants, or frogs by adding some text features, editing, & completing our WOW covers.  We will also experiment with a new digital storytelling app - Toontastic Pirates Jr.

MATH: 
This week we will learn about functions, rules, and patterns while adding and subtracting.  We will also practice building numbers using a variety of strategies and configurations.

Library book on or before Wednesday!

FUN TO BE FIT: 
Our annual Fun to Be Fit event is this Friday afternoon.  Families are welcome to come and join in the fun (strollers work well for pushing younger siblings around the track)!  Please park in the big parking lot and meet us up on the track around 1:20, as the event starts @ 1:30.  Please watch the weather and dress your child accordingly (shorts, jacket, hat, sunglasses, tennis shoes, etc—looks like we have a nice week ahead of us—but it does tend to be windy up on the track.  You might also want to send a water bottle and sunscreen—we’ll be outside for about an hour total.  If your child ordered a shirt, they will be receiving them this week. If your child didn’t order a shirt—please dress them in a lime green t-shirt or their gray Kindergarten t-shirt.

READING:
This week our class will be reading stories about how people work together to solve problems. Children will also learn ways to make decisions, including the concept of voting. Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
· Vocabulary—decide, opinion—Discuss how your family works together to make a decision. Explain that people have different opinions, or ideas, and that voting is one way of making a decision.
· High-Frequency Words—who, good—Using your finger, softly write the words who and good on your child’s arm. Then ask your child to write each word on your arm. Think of sentences that use each word. Write the sentences on paper, then encourage your child to read them aloud.
· Category Words—question words (who, what, when, where, why, how) - Think of a decision your family needs to make, such as what book to read before bedtime, or what foods to prepare for a meal. Then help your child form questions that will help the family make the decision.
· Phonics—long u, digraph wh— Play “Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down.” Tell your child to show thumbs up if you say a word with a long sound, or show thumbs down if the word doesn’t have a long sound.
· Dibels—The ISD & Title 1 Staff will be coming in to do our Spring Benchmarking on Monday.

WRITING: 
The students did an amazing job with their digital stories last week—hopefully you received an email with their published story. :) This week we will complete a journal page about lifecycles and begin writing a new informational book about frogs, butterflies, or plants. 

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:  
This week we will wrap up our study of lifecycles as we study flowers and plants.  We will be learning about what they need in order to grow, as well as the different parts of a flower and their functions.

MATH:  
This week we will continue to work on addition and subtraction.  We will also practice ordering nonconsecutive numbers (21, 36, 48, 52, 75); students will bring home a homelink that will ask you to put your family members ages in order. :) The ISD and Title 1 Staff will also be taking the students to do their Spring Aimsweb Benchmarking.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK: 
Our student of the week is Camlar Ingleright. Camlar enjoys spending time with his pets (Fluffy & Casper) and his family.  He likes to eat fruit and popsicles and his favorite movie is Cars.  He recently accomplished one of his lifelong goals—going to Walt Disney World with his family!  Congratulations to Camlar on being Student of the Week!

READING:
This week our class will be reading stories about natural resources. Children will learn how they can use things in nature to create new things.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
· Vocabulary—natural resources & create—Discuss different natural resources with your child. For example, talk about how we use trees to create, or make new things that people use every day.
· High-Frequency Words—where & look—Write the words where and look, then ask your child to write each word. Think of sentences that include each word. Read the sentences together and have your child underline the words where and look.
· Category Words—food made from grain—Explain that grain is a plant grown in soil. Soil comes from the earth. Invite your child to cut out pictures of foods made from grain and make a collage.
· Phonics: long o & s blends (sl, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw) - Have your child guess words that include the long o sound, as in no, hose, rose, bone, and rope. Give a clue and act out the word. When your child guesses the word, write it on a piece of paper and have your child circle the letter o.

WRITING: 
This week we will be sharing our informational booklets with the class via Author’s Chair.  We will also write another digital story using our Story Buddy app and complete a journal page about lifecycles. 

MATH: 
This week we will continue to work on addition and subtraction.  We will also practice telling time to the hour and work on building numbers 0-100 with base 10 blocks and practice ‘trading up.’  We will go to the computer lab on Thursday morning and take our NWEA Math Assessment.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES: 
This week we will continue our study of lifecycles as we focus on reading several informational texts related to seeds & plants and conduct some hands-on experiments. Our caterpillars are in chrysalis form now and should be emerging into butterflies in the next couple of weeks.

Library book on or before Thursday!
