Newsletter Updates for the Week of September 24th

DATES TO REMEMBER:
-Wednesday, October 3rd—Pupil Count Day
-Monday, October 15th—Delayed Start

SNACK/PARENT VOLUNTEER CALENDAR:
Your September snack calendar runs through the first week of October. My hope is to send home the October Snack Calendar at the end of the week, with parent volunteers included. Several of you have expressed interest in volunteering on a regular basis and I appreciate your willingness to help out, and your patience as I coordinate the schedule. Just a reminder to please send in 2 snacks on your child’s day; one for the morning & one for the afternoon. At this time we have 19 students in our classroom.

AIMSWEB & DIBELS:
The students were screened last week using the Aimsweb Screener for Math. The Dibels team will be coming in this week to begin assessing the students for Reading. For Kindergartners, they will be asking them to name letters and identify ‘first sounds’ in words. I will share the results with you once I receive them.

ATTENDANCE:
Unfortunately we have had some illnesses already this year in our classroom. Our days in Kindergarten are busy and exhausting for many of the students; I’m sure you can tell by the time they arrive home. We have so much to learn this year and Kindergarten is such an important year of learning routines and foundational skills. So much of what we learn happens at large group, small groups, & with hands-on activities. Please help your child be their best by making sure they get plenty of rest. Also, if your child is going to be late or absent please be sure to call the office and let us know.

READING:
This week we will be reading Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten as we work on comprehension skills, vocabulary, & identifying characters. Our focus letters for this week are K, S, D, T, & R. During our literacy stations we will continue to work on identifying letters and their sounds. During our literacy stations, students complete activities at the tables and also visit the library, writing station, retelling station, abc station, puzzles & games, and the computers. This week we will introduce 2 new beanie baby strategies: Jabber the Reteller (Comprehension) and Lips the Fish, who reminds us to look at the first letter of a word and get our lips ready with the first sound. This week we will also talk about the difference between Narrative & Informational Texts.

WRITING:
This week we will learn about the importance of ‘details’ in our writing/drawing as we practice drawing a detailed picture of Mrs. Brinks. We will continue working on listening and speaking while storytelling & we will add to our list of: “Where Writer’s Get Ideas.” Later in the week, we will complete a Type 3 writing about what happens to the trees in the Fall and we will develop an Anchor Chart for “What do I do to write a story?”

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
Fall is officially here! This week we will finish up our study of apples and begin talking about the seasons and all of the changes that occur in the Fall. We will read
several books related to Fall; some Narrative and some Informational.

MATH:
We will continue to work on writing and identifying our numbers 0-9 and spend some time reading, extending, and creating patterns. Students will be introduced to coins this week and will practice sorting coins based on their size, color, & distinguishing features. We will also talk about different sizes and practice comparing heights of various objects around our classroom.
