Newsletter Updates for the Week of October 6th

DATES TO REMEMBER:
-Friday, Oct. 10th—Progress Reports Home
-Monday, Oct. 20th—Delayed Start

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
Our student of the week is Clayton Heuker. Clayton enjoys superheroes, building with legos, & deer hunting.  His favorite place to go is to the water park, and when he grows up, Clayton aspires to become a policeman & a farmer. Congratulations to Clayton on being Student of the Week!

PROGRESS REPORTS:
Progress reports will be sent home this Friday with students.  We are really beginning to fall into a nice routine here at school.  The progress report will give you an idea of how your child is doing socially and with following the rules and routines at school.  You will also receive your child’s DIBELS results and hopefully their Aimsweb results (I am still waiting on this data).  A couple of things to keep in mind with these screeners: their score indicates how many correct responses they had in 1 minute, also it takes time and practice for Kindergartners to learn what the assessor is asking them to do.  However, it does give us a starting point as we begin targeting skills and needs.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s progress at school, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or stop in.

SAFETY DRILLS:
This week we will conduct a couple of safety drills during school—a fire drill & a Code Rambler.  We conduct safety drills periodically throughout the year so that students know how to be safe during any situation that may arise. If they mention it at home, it is a great opportunity to talk about the importance of safety and to reinforce your own safety procedures at home:)

READING:
This week our reading lessons will focus on the letter Aa and we will introduce the sightword—we.  Our focus stories for this week are Pouch! and Baby Animals on the Move, which we will use to practice building our listening and comprehension skills.  This week we will practice using Eagle Eye & Lips the Fish during Read to Self time, as we ‘read’ some 'good-fit' materials from our book boxes.  We will also begin ‘partner reading’ where we will practice building our accuracy, fluency, and comprehension skills while reading with a friend. The students are doing a GREAT job with our new expanded Literacy Stations and are working on so many foundational reading skills each day—letter ID, sounds, rhyming, handwriting, retelling stories, computer skills, sightwords, & listening to stories on CD/ipads.

WRITING:
This week we will practice labeling our pictures and in Kindergarten this means “writing the sounds that we hear.” We will be drawing and labeling Mat Man, as well as a fire truck.  Students will also be writing about their favorite baby animal and what they like to do in the Fall.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will focus on Fire Safety and Prevention. We will read several informational texts related to fire safety and watch several video segments to spark our discussions.  October is Fire Prevention Month; please be sure to check the batteries in your smoke detectors at home & discuss and practice an escape plan for your family.

MATH:
This week we will be working with shapes—matching shapes, identifying shapes in our world, and combining shapes to create new shapes. Students will be introduced to the ten frame & will practice building numbers on the ten frame. We will also be going on a number hunt around school.

ITEMS NEEDED—PLEASE SEND IN:
-Gallon Milk Jugs (empty and rinsed out) for us to use for an art project THIS week. :)
