STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
Our student of the week is Brendan Westdorp.  Bren enjoys swimming and playing the drums.  He is also a master at beating levels on Super Mario World.  One of his favorite movies is The Three Stooges and he likes to read the Cat in the Hat.  His goals include getting to the end of the monkey bars, riding his bike without training wheels, & learning how to read—all within reach! :) Congratulations to Brendan on being Student of the Week!

READING FOLDERS:
This week students will begin bringing home ‘Take Home Reading Folders.’ In their folder will be a ‘good fit book’ that your child has selected. The book will be at their ‘instructional level’ which means it should be a little challenging for your child, but not too hard. Students must bring their reading folders & book back in order to check out a new one.  They will bring them home 2-3 times a week, but not every night.  It has been my experience that students who consistently read at home, and practice their skills faithfully, really take-off with reading!  You will also find some other things in their folder along with a letter from me.
-Reading Log—please write the title & initial
-Beanie Baby Strategy Sheet—to remind them of their strategies and share them with you.:)
-Sightword Fluency Chart—to practice sightwords
-ABC Chart—to practice letters & sounds + speed
-Number Fluency Chart— to practice #’s + speed
-Nonsense Word Fluency Chart—they have to be able to read nonsense words for Dibels
-Raz Kids Log-In Card—You are welcome to keep this in their folder OR keep it @ home.

READING:
This week our class will be reading stories about the kinds of fresh foods grown on a farm. Your child will be identifying different kinds of fruits and vegetables.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
· Vocabulary—fresh, delicious—Talk about the fresh fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store or farmers’ market.
· High-Frequency Words—he, with—Write the words he and with on paper and ask your child to trace both words. Write a sentence using each word. Have your child point to, circle, and say each word.
· Category Words—fruits and vegetables—Write the names of fruits and vegetables on index cards. Have your child draw a picture of the word on each card. Then invite your child to sort the cards into fruit and vegetable piles.
· Phonics—Ff & Rr—Play “I Spy” with your child using beginning sounds “I spy something that begins with the /f/ sound.”

WRITING:
This week we will complete a journal about what we like to do on a Snow Day (since we’ve had a few lately).  We will also begin a new pattern book that has a question & answer structure to it.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will read several books related to friendship and kindness, in preparation for Valentine’s Day. We will also learn about the important role that our heart plays and have an opportunity to listen to our heartbeats.

MATH:
This week we will engage in several FUN math activities and games related to Valentine’s Day—writing our numbers, going on a number hunt, measuring using hearts, determining the bigger number on hearts, and adding with hearts.

VALENTINES PARTY:
  • We will begin around 12:30 on Thursday afternoon.
  • We have all of our cereal boxes and now and will finish decorating them this week - they are looking adorable!
  • You are welcome to send in your child's valentines any time on or before Thursday
We will have gym on Tuesday but not Wednesday this week, as the older students will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart.  Kindergarteners do not participate in this event, but we do go down and watch for a few minutes to cheer on our friends and family members:)
