STUDENT OF THE WEEK:

Our student of the week is Jersel Javier.  Jersel likes puppies & eating french fries; she enjoys riding her bike and swimming.  Two goals she has for this year include—visiting her grandma and learning how to play the piano—which goes perfectly with her creative personality! Congratulations to Jersel on being our Student of the Week!

HAPPY SPRING:

I hope you had an enjoyable Spring Break—whether you braved the MI weather or escaped to warmer places:) Since the weather is unpredictable this time of year, please continue to send warm clothes for recess. I would suggest layers so that they can start the day off with a heavier coat and mittens and then hopefully end the day with a jacket or sweatshirt. Please continue to send boots as the playground is muddy.

READING:
This week our class will be reading stories about the sky during daytime and nighttime. Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing:
· Vocabulary—distance & recognize —Take your child outside during the day and at night. Help them identify the sun, moon, clouds, stars, sunrise, and sunset.
· Sightwords—that & this—Write sentences with these words and practice reading them together.
· Category Words—opposites—Use gestures to act out words that are opposites such as up/down, open/close, in/out, etc.
· Phonics—Letter Review—u, g, w, x, v, j, qu, & z
· Comprehension—problem & solution—Discuss different problems that come up during the week and brainstorm solutions together.
· Take Home Reading Folders—Report cards will be coming home this Friday. On your child’s report card I’ve indicated their current independent reading level. The goal right now is that they are at a Level B or higher. However, when students shop and bring home books, it is typically 1 level higher—their instructional level, which means they can read most of the words, but need some support. The goal is that they will be reading at or above a Level D by the end of Kindergarten.

WRITING:
This week we will write about something fun we did over Spring Break, as well as our favorite U.S. Symbol. We will also write our very first Opinion Letter about a familiar book.

MATH:
This week we will be learning about estimating and practice making ‘smart guesses.’ We will also practice adding combinations of 10; we will survey our classmates and record our survey data onto graphs, and do some special math activities related to Easter.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:

We are beginning a new Science Unit on the Sun and it’s important role in sustaining life on Earth. We will also be reading several narrative and informational books about the Moon and we will be making some comparisons between the Sun & Moon.

BOOK-IT CALENDAR:
Please be sure to return your March Book-it Calendars; March is the final month for Book-It for this school year.

Please be sure to return your library book on or before Friday!
