FIELDTRIP TO KETTUNEN CENTER:
Our class will be going to Kettunen Center this Wednesday, May 23rd. We will leave school around 8:30 and return around 2:30.  Here are some important reminders:
-We will be outside for a majority of the day, so please dress your child accordingly—tennis shoes, jacket/sweatshirt, sunglasses, hat, etc.
-For one of our activities, we will be dipping in the pond for critters; typically this is a muddy activity, so I recommend sending them in older shoes for that day.
-Sunscreen—please send sunscreen, labeled with your child’s name, IF you feel they need it. We ask that you apply it in the morning before sending them to school and we will reapply at lunch time.
-Lunch & Snack are provided.
-I will provided bug spray for the class if needed.
-TICKS—PLEASE be sure to check your child thoroughly after we return from our fieldtrip. Doctors recommend checking their hair, inside elbows, behind knees, under armpits, and other cracks & crevices. We are hoping NOT to bring any unwanted ‘pests’ home.
-Kettunen Center is a ‘smoke free’ facility.

READING:
This week our class will be reading stories about ways we can protect the environment. Children will learn about endangered animals and the ways we can help protect animals in their habitats. Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing:
· Vocabulary—environment & protect —Discuss ways your family can reduce, reuse, and recycle resources.
· Sightwords—WE DID IT! - We’ve introduced all 51 sightwords! We will be reviewing and assessing them this week!
· Category Words—baby animals
· Phonics—Reviewing long vowels & digraphs th, sh, ch, & wh
· Reading Folders—I will be collecting reading folders at the end of this week. I will be sending home ALL of their ‘goodies’ from their book boxes once I receive their reading folders back. The students do have access to Raz Kids ALL summer long!! :)

FUN TO BE FIT:
Our annual Fun to Be Fit event is this Friday afternoon. Families are welcome to come and join in the fun (strollers work well for pushing younger siblings around the track). Please park in the big parking lot and meet us up on the track around 1:25, as the event begins at 1:30. Please watch the weather and dress your child accordingly (shorts, jacket, hat, sunglasses, tennis shoes, etc.—it does tend to be windy up on the track. You might also want to send a waterbottle & sunscreen— we’ll be outside for about an hour total. We will leave the waterbottles in the classroom for drinks after the event.  You are welcome to come back to the classroom with us and sign your child out if you choose. If your child ordered a T-shirt, they will be receiving them on Thursday. If they did not order a shirt, please dress them in their color run shirt or gray kindergarten shirt.

WRITING:
This week we will be wrapping up our second informational text and we are excited to share them with you next week after our concert! We will be creating a digital story about our fieldtrip to Kettunen Center and email it to our parents. The students are also enjoying creating their own digital stories on their Toontastic Pirates Jr. app.

MATH:

This week we will work on weighing using a pan balance and introduce telling time to the hour.
