REPORT CARDS & CONFERENCES:
Parent teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 14th  from 1:00-7:00.  You will be receiving a notice of your scheduled time very shortly; the office has been working hard to coordinate scheduling for families with multiple children.  Please check your time and your availability and return the RSVP as soon as possible.  I’m planning to send report cards home this Friday so that you will have time to look them over before our conference.  We will have an opportunity to discuss your child’s strengths and challenges and also talk about things we can do at home and at school to strengthen their skills.  I will also have sign up sheets for our Thanksgiving Celebration, Christmas Party, and Valentine’s Party.  In addition, you’ll have an opportunity to read a few of our class books that we’ve authored and illustrated and see some pictures of our year so far.  Don't forget to check out the Book Fair!

BOOK-IT:
I’ve attached the November Book-It Calendar to the newsletter so that you can keep track of your child’s reading for the month of November.  Please be sure to send in your completed October Calendars to that I can issue Pizza Certificates.  I know that life is busy; remember the goal is that you and your child spend 15 minutes reading at least 4 days a week. :)

READING:
Our focus text for this week is Raccoons and Ripe Corn, which we will use to work on comprehension, retelling, setting, & plot.  Our focus letter for this week is Rr and our new sightwords are it & but.  We will introduce a new beanie this week, our first Fluency beanie: Pop the Weasel; he reminds us that the sight words we know ‘pop’ out when we are reading and help us read fluently.

WRITING:
This week we will begin a new Writing Unit which focuses on being Scientists—observing, drawing, and listing & labeling our observations.  We will be looking at several Informational/Non-Fiction Texts related to Fall to examine the qualities of Non-Fiction Texts.  We will also begin collecting some vocabulary words that we can use in our own writing, and then collaborate to write a class book later in the week about our observations.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will read some books about America, as we discuss and practice the democratic process of voting.  With the opening day of deer season right around the corner, we will be talking about Gun Safety.  We will meet Eddie Eagle who teaches children what to do if they ever find a gun lying around: Stop, Don’t Touch, Leave the Area, Tell an Adult!

MATH:
This week we will introduce symmetry and practice identifying things that are symmetrical.  We will also ‘vote’ for snack and graph the results on a bar graph.  We will continue to practice identifying and ordering numbers 1-20.
